El ánsar común es la más grande y corpulenta de las ocas grises, fácilmente distinguible por su plumaje moteado gris parduzco con la cabeza más oscura y el pecho y vientre más pálidos. Un pico naranja o rosa con la uña blanca o marrón, combinado con las patas y los pies de un rosa brillante, facilita su identificación. Los adultos muestran un patrón distintivo de pliegues en «acordeón» en las plumas del cuello, mientras que los juveniles carecen del moteado negro en el pecho y vientre que presentan los adultos y tienen las patas grisáceas. En vuelo o cuando estira las alas, notarás el borde de ataque de las alas y la rabadilla de color gris pálido contrastando marcadamente con las plumas de vuelo más oscuras. Con una longitud de 74 a 91 centímetros y una envergadura alar de 147 a 180 centímetros, los machos son notoriamente más grandes que las hembras.
Distribución y Hábitat
Los ánsar comunes tienen una distribución paleártica amplia por toda Europa y Asia. La subespecie occidental cría en Islandia, Escandinavia y gran parte de Europa central y septentrional, mientras que la subespecie oriental se distribuye por Asia hasta el noreste de China. Históricamente, las poblaciones europeas migraban hacia el sur para invernar en las regiones mediterráneas y el norte de África, pero muchas poblaciones ahora permanecen en sus áreas de cría durante todo el año, incluso en Escandinavia. Las poblaciones asiáticas invernan en Azerbaiyán, Irán, Pakistán, el norte de India, Bangladesh y China.
Durante la temporada de cría, estas ocas prefieren páramos, marismas, zonas alrededor de lagos e islas costeras. En invierno, ocupan hábitats semiacuáticos como estuarios, marismas y campos inundados, aventurándose frecuentemente en tierras agrícolas para alimentarse.
Comportamiento y Dieta
Los ánsar comunes son aves muy gregarias que viajan hacia sus zonas de cría en el norte cada primavera. Normalmente se aparean de por vida, construyendo sus nidos en el suelo entre la vegetación. Una puesta típica contiene entre tres y cinco huevos, que la hembra incuba mientras ambos progenitores defienden y crían a los pollos. Los grupos familiares permanecen juntos durante la migración otoñal, separándose al año siguiente. La especie emite un reclamo fuerte y distintivo: un graznido «aahng-ung-ung» que producen tanto en tierra como en vuelo; una bandada suena notablemente como perros aulando. Cada oca puede reconocer a otros individuos conocidos por sus vocalizaciones.
Estas ocas son principalmente herbívoras, alimentándose extensamente de hierba y consumiendo frecuentemente cultivos agrícolas durante el invierno. Su dieta y hábitos de pastoreo las hacen avistamientos familiares en los paisajes rurales de su rango de distribución.
Mejor Época y Lugares para Verla
Las migraciones de primavera y otoño ofrecen excelentes oportunidades para observar ánsar comunes en grandes bandadas. Sin embargo, muchas poblaciones ahora son residentes durante todo el año, particularmente en el sur de Inglaterra y áreas urbanas, haciéndolas accesibles durante todo el año. Las visitas invernales a estuarios, marismas y campos agrícolas inundados, especialmente en las zonas tradicionales de invernada por toda Europa meridional, el Mediterráneo y el norte de África, proporcionan avistamientos fiables.
