The park's subarctic-style climate—classified as Dfc, with no dry season and precipitation distributed year-round—sustains montane forests of spruce and larch that cloak the lower slopes, giving way to alpine meadows and rocky outcrops at elevation. This is a realm of perpetual moisture, where snowmelt feeds rushing streams and where summer rainfall keeps vegetation lush despite the region's latitude. The terrain itself is sculptural: steep gorges carved by glaciation, high plateaus studded with dwarf shrubs and hardy grasses, and the distinctive pale cliffs that dominate the skyline. Within these varied habitats live birds of prey that hunt the thermals above the crags, woodland songbirds that nest in the coniferous forests, small mammals adapted to the cool montane environment, and a shifting cast of migratory species that use these valleys and ridges as seasonal highways between lowland and alpine zones.
For wildlife photographers and birders, the park offers a season-long theatre of natural drama. Spring and early summer bring waves of migratory songbirds and insects, fuelling the arrival of insectivorous raptors to the open country; autumn sees concentrations of raptors following the reverse migration, while the steep cliffs and open ridges provide unobstructed sightlines for observation and photography. The dramatic lighting of the high Dolomites—particularly the rose-gold alpenglow at dawn and dusk—transforms the pale rock faces into a photographer's canvas. The Sospirolo area, nestled in the park's eastern reaches, offers accessible entry to this world: modest elevation gain, well-maintained trails through mixed forest and alpine grassland, and proximity to the characteristic geological formations that make the region globally significant. Spring through autumn, when roads are clear and temperatures permit extended fieldwork, remains the optimal window; yet even winter visits reward those prepared for snow, revealing the landscape in austere monochrome and offering rare glimpses into the behaviour of species that remain year-round in these challenging heights.
