Anteriormente estuvo situada en su propia familia Coerebidae y más recientemente en incertae sedis. Es natural de la América tropical (Neotrópico), desde México y las Antillas, por América Central y del Sur, hasta Argentina. Es un visitante raro de la Florida, en Estados Unidos. En Cuba también es rara, aunque probablemente ya sea residente.
