Blyth's Reed Warbler is a small, unobtrusive warbler measuring 12–14 cm in length with a weight of 8–16 g. Its most distinctive features are a relatively long, thick greyish-brown bill and slim build with short, rounded wings. The plumage is deliberately plain: upperparts are olive-brown, while underparts are off-white. A short whitish supercilium runs between the bill's base and eye, contrasting with a dusky eye-stripe. The legs and feet are pinkish-brown, as is the base of the lower mandible. Overall, the species lacks the warmer tones found in related reed warblers, making it a challenging identification for field birders.
Range & Habitat
This warbler breeds across a vast Palearctic range extending from the Baltic Sea in eastern Europe almost to Lake Baikal in Siberia, with an isolated population in Central Asia. It winters in South Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Notably, the species has been expanding westwards in recent decades, reaching the Netherlands (where it bred in 2022) and Scotland (where breeding was confirmed in 2024), having formerly been a rare vagrant to western Europe.
During breeding season, Blyth's Reed Warbler favours the edges and clearings of damp broadleaved woodlands, wooded gullies, parks and gardens, scrub, and coniferous forests. In winter quarters, it inhabits trees in both wet and dry habitats, showing greater habitat flexibility than during the breeding season.
Behaviour & Diet
Blyth's Reed Warbler is solitary and territorial during breeding, with territories in Finland ranging from 600 to 1,300 m². The species is typically monogamous, though polygyny has been recorded. Breeding occurs between late May and July. Pairs construct compact cup nests from plant material and spiders' webs, positioned 20–60 cm above ground. Clutches of 3–6 eggs are laid; both parents incubate for 12–13 days, with chicks fledging at 11–13 days old and remaining dependent for a further 10–22 days. Males occasionally abandon the first brood after fledging to seek additional mates.
The species has a distinctive variable song mixing harsh sounds—ticks, chaks, and churrs—with melodious whistles and mimicry. Its diet consists primarily of insects gleaned from vegetation, typical of insectivorous warblers.
Best Time & Places to See It
For breeding birds, visit Palearctic regions between late May and July. Finland and other Baltic and Scandinavian localities offer reliable sightings during this period. Western European observers have increasing chances in the Netherlands and Scotland following recent range expansion. Winter sightings are possible throughout South Asia, particularly in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal where the species is more numerous and predictable.
Photography Tips
Photographing Blyth's Reed Warbler presents challenges due to its plain plumage and skulking behaviour in dense vegetation. Position yourself near territorial males during early morning in breeding season when they are most vocal and active. Focus on capturing the diagnostic features: the relatively long bill, whitish supercilium, and eye-stripe. The species' preference for woodland edges and clearings may offer slightly more open perching opportunities than deeper reed-bed species. Use a long telephoto lens and patience, as the bird rarely perches prominently.
