Se encuentra en Chile continental e insular, Argentina y Uruguay, llegando hasta Bolivia, Paraguay y el extremo sur de Brasil. Durante sus desplazamientos invernales, se lo ha visto en las islas Malvinas. Es un animal sedentario y con un gran poder de adaptación.
