A veces es considerada una subespecie de la cigüeñuela común (Himantopus himantopus). Ha sido registrada desde Malasia, Japón, las Filipinas, Brunéi, Isla de Navidad, Indonesia, Palaos, Nueva Guinea, Australia y Nueva Zelanda.
