Su nombre científico, Geococcyx, viene del griego antiguo γῆ (tierra) y κόκκυξ (cuclillo), por ser ave pariente del cuclillo, pero corredora (de la tierra y no del aire). Habita desde Estados Unidos hasta el centro de México.
