Es la más extendida de las pintadas; originaria de África, ha sido introducida en las Antillas Menores, en Italia, en el sur de Francia, y algunos países de Hispanoamérica, como República Dominicana, Colombia, Costa Rica o Paraguay por ejemplo.[cita requerida]
