Identificación
El pato real es un ave acuática grande y distintiva, siendo los machos significativamente más grandes que las hembras. Los machos alcanzan 76–84 cm de largo y pesan hasta 3–4 kg, mientras que las hembras son más pequeñas con 71–76 cm y alrededor de 1,25 kg. La envergadura alar oscila entre 137 y 152 cm. Ambos sexos exhiben plumaje predominantemente negro con manchas blancas grandes y llamativas en las alas, aunque los machos muestran un plumaje más iridiscente y brillante, particularmente en el dorso y las plumas alares, mientras que las hembras lucen más apagadas. Los juveniles son más opacos en general con poco o ningún blanco en las alas.
Los machos poseen una cresta corta distintiva en la nuca y una verruga característica de color negro oscuro o rojo oscuro en la base del pico, acompañada de piel facial desnuda del mismo color. El pico es negro con manchitas rosa pálido, y los ojos son de color amarillento-marrón. Las hembras carecen de la verruga prominente y tienen la cara emplumada en su lugar. Ambos sexos presentan garras largas en los pies, patas palmeadas oscuras y una cola notablemente ancha y plana. Los machos producen un llamado grave y silbante, mientras que las hembras emiten un ronroneo trino tranquilo.
Distribución y Hábitat
El pato real es nativo de América, con rango que va desde el Bajo Río Bravo de Texas y México hacia el sur hasta Argentina y Uruguay. Aunque estas aves provienen de regiones tropicales, muestran una adaptabilidad notable a climas más fríos, prosperando en temperaturas tan bajas como −12 °C e incluso sobreviviendo condiciones aún más gélidas. Esta resistencia al frío ha permitido que la especie establezca poblaciones ferales más allá de su rango nativo.
Las poblaciones ferales de patos reales ahora ocurren localmente en Nueva Zelanda, Australia, Estados Unidos y en Europa Central y Oriental, todas descendientes de aves domesticadas que se han escapado o sido liberadas. La especie ha sido domesticada desde tiempos precolombinos por pueblos indígenas americanos. Los patos reales domésticos generalmente son más pesados y menos capaces de vuelo sostenido que sus contrapartes silvestres, y su plumaje es frecuentemente más variable, presentando a menudo manchas blancas extensas.
Comportamiento y Dieta
Los patos reales son patos dabuidores pertenecientes a la subfamilia Anatinae, aunque análisis genético reciente sugiere que podrían estar más estrechamente relacionados con la subfamilia Tadorninae. La especie exhibe dimorfismo sexual llamativo no solo en tamaño sino también en apariencia del plumaje. Los machos poseen penes helicoidales distintivos que pueden erizarse en 0,3 segundos. Las hembras han evolucionado vaginas enrolladas que se retuercen en dirección opuesta, aparentemente funcionando como una adaptación para limitar la cópula forzada por los machos.
La especie es monotípica sin subespecies reconocidas, aunque los pájaros domesticados a veces se refieren informalmente como una "subespecie domestica", aunque esto no tiene validez taxonómica. Los patos reales domesticados se conocen comúnmente como pato criollo en español, y en contextos culinarios frecuentemente se les llama pato de Berbería.
Mejor Época y Lugares para Verlo
En su rango nativo, los patos reales pueden encontrarse desde el Bajo Río Bravo de Texas y México a través de América Central y del Sur hasta Argentina y Uruguay. Los viajeros que buscan poblaciones silvestres deben explorar hábitats de humedales a lo largo de este vasto rango. La adaptabilidad de la especie a climas variados significa que puede encontrarse en ambientes diversos en estas regiones.
Fuera de su rango nativo, las poblaciones ferales se encuentran en Nueva Zelanda, Australia, partes de Estados Unidos y Europa Central y Oriental, donde las poblaciones establecidas pueden ser más accesibles para los viajeros. El conocimiento local de cuerpos de agua y parques en estas regiones ayudará a localizar aves ferales que se han vuelto semihabitadas a la presencia humana.

El plumaje llamativo del pato real y su tamaño considerable lo convierten en un excelente sujeto fotográfico. El contraste entre las manchas alares blancas y negras es particularmente dramático y fotografía bien con buena luz. Los machos son especialmente fotogénicos debido a su mayor tamaño, verruga facial prominente y cresta cefálica distintiva, que crean siluetas características y buenas tomas de detalle facial.
Captura a las aves en el agua para mostrar su cola ancha y plana y patas palmeadas, o fotográfialas en tierra para destacar sus garras grandes y postura erguida. Los ojos amarillento-marrones proporcionan buenos puntos focales para retratos en primer plano.
