Cascanueces norteño

Photo © egorbirder — CC BY 4.0 — Source: iNaturalist photo #205729178El cascanueces común (Nucifraga caryocatactes) es una especie de ave del orden paseriforme de la familia Corvidae, del género Nucifraga, ampliamente distribuido por los bosques fríos y montañas del Viejo Mundo y del oeste norteamericano de 11 ubeespecies. El americanoa cuenta con diferencias físicas y comportamentales del euroasiático.
Es de cola corta, y alas anchas, con pico negro, es esbelto y bastante largo, agudamente puntiagudo, y varía de tamaño según las razas. El iris, las patas y los pies son negros; es reconocido por su impresionante capacidad de memoria y orientación.
Tiene una habilidad de extraer de los árboles sus nueces y bellotas con su fuerte y afilado pico como herramienta, para abrir las piñas de los pinos y extraer las semillas como piñones, bellotas y avellanas.
