Es un ave rapaz de tamaño medio, que aparece en todos los continentes, excepto en la Antártida, aunque en América del Sur es solo migradora no nidificante. Algunas clasificaciones lo colocan como el único miembro del género Pandion, mientras que otras consideran una segunda especie dentro de este género, Pandion cristatus.
