Its name of pyrrhuloxia was suggested as a new genus by ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte. He conceived it as portmanteau of the bullfinch genus Pyrrhula and the crossbill genus Loxia as he imagined the bird was an intermediate between the two .
