Es un ave parcialmente migratoria; poblaciones anidan en el norte de América del Norte y pasan el invierno en el centro y sur de América del Norte, América Central y Antillas Mayores, otras poblaciones son residentes en el sur de México y norte de América Central. Algunos autores sostienen que se divide en más de una especie.
