Es nativa de la América tropical (Neotropico), desde México, por América Central y del Sur hasta Tierra del Fuego. Fue tratada anteriormente como un grupo de subespecies del chochín criollo (Troglodytes aedon) pero clasificada como especie separada, debido a las diferencias en el plumaje, canto, ecología y morfología.
