Cría en la costa de Europa, en aguas dulces someras (cañaverales, arrozales, etc). Inverna en África y en algunas zonas muy localizadas del Mediterráneo.
Forma colonias laxas, a menudo conjuntamente con otras especies similares como la gaviota reidora.
