Las marmotas canosas viven cerca de la línea de árboles en las laderas con pastos y hierbas para comer y áreas rocosas para cubrirse
Los parientes más cercanos de la especie son marmota de vientre amarillo, marmota olímpica y la La marmota de Vancouver, aunque las relaciones exactas no están claras.
