Se le encuentra solamente en el continente asiático; es un depredador carnívoro y es la especie de félido más grande del mundo, sobrepasando por largo al león (mientras los leones más grandes, normalmente no pasan de los 250 kg, los Tigres de Siberia, pueden llegar fácilmente a pesar los 350 kg. Se tiene el caso de que alguno de ellos ha llegado a pesar 423 kg). También es cierto que ambas especies pudieron alcanzar un tamaño comparable al de los fósiles de félidos de mayor tamaño.
