Collared Pratincole

Identification

The collared pratincole is a small wader measuring 24–28 cm in length with a distinctive 60–70 cm wingspan. Its most striking features are its long pointed wings, long forked tail, and short bill—all adaptations for its unique feeding style. The plumage is predominantly brown on the back and head, with darker flight feathers on the wings. The belly is crisp white, and the underwings are distinctively chestnut, though they appear dark from below. This colour combination is a key identification feature.

Distinguishing this species from closely related pratincoles requires good views. The black-winged pratincole and oriental pratincole may occur in overlapping ranges. The oriental pratincole also displays chestnut underwings but has a noticeably shorter tail, which helps separate it from the collared pratincole.

Range & Habitat

The collared pratincole inhabits the warmer parts of Europe, southwest Asia, and Africa. Two subspecies are recognised: the nominate subspecies ranges from southern Europe and North Africa to south Pakistan, while the fuelleborni subspecies is found across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to central Ethiopia, south Somalia, and east South Africa. The species is highly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa, and is rare when encountered north of its breeding range.

This bird favours open country and is particularly common near water, especially in the evening hours when it hunts for insects. It has been recorded as a vagrant across a wide geographic range, including Austria, Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, and many other regions far from its typical range.

Behaviour & Diet

The collared pratincole displays a remarkable feeding behaviour that sets it apart from most other waders. Rather than foraging on the ground or in shallow water, it hunts insects on the wing in a manner reminiscent of swallows, though it retains the ability to feed on the ground when necessary. This aerial feeding technique is facilitated by its long wings and tail, making it an acrobatic and efficient insect hunter.

Breeding is colonial, with pairs nesting in shallow scrapes on open ground, often near water. Clutches comprise 2–4 eggs with cream-coloured backgrounds marked with black or dark brown blotches. Both parents incubate the eggs for 17–19 days. The young are precocial and leave the nest within 2–3 days, remaining dependent on their parents for food until they fledge at 25–30 days of age.
