Long-legged Buzzard
Identification
The long-legged buzzard is a large and sturdy member of the Buteo genus, distinguished by its relatively large bill, long wings, rather long tail, and notably long legs with powerful feet. This species is highly variable in plumage, displaying three to four main morphs. Pale morph adults feature a creamy rufous to light sandy head with minimal darker streaking, dark brown upperparts with sandy buff streaks, and a light rufous-orange tail. Intermediate morphs show richer coloration with darker, more rufous upperparts and patterned breasts. Rufous morphs are ochracecous overall with darker rufous on plumage contrasts. Dark morph adults are blackish-brown to black with whitish streaks on the nape and grey to brown-grey tails with broad subterminal bands. Juveniles resemble their respective adult morphs but tend to have neater, paler edging and more streaking on the head and breast, with eye colour progressing from pale grey to greyish yellow before darkening. Adults possess very dark brown eyes, while yellow ceres and legs are characteristic of all ages.
In flight, the long-legged buzzard presents an almost eagle-like silhouette with a protruding head, long broad wings with fairly straight edges, and rounded wingtips. The species glides with arms raised and wings noticeably kinked at the carpals, soaring in wide circles with wings in shallow dihedral. The pale, orangey-based tail often appears white at a distance and stands out strikingly against the darker body and rear wings. Adults show blackish primary coverts and greater coverts with dark grey flight feathers, while the underwing coverts are typically lightly streaked with rufous in pale morphs.
Range & Habitat
The long-legged buzzard is widely distributed across Eurasia and North Africa, ranging from Southeastern Europe down through East Africa to the northern Indian subcontinent. This adaptable species is comfortable in a variety of habitats and demonstrates considerable flexibility in nesting sites, utilizing rocks, cliffs, trees, and even artificial structures such as pylons and utility poles as vantage points and nesting locations.
The species is characteristically sluggish, spending considerable time perched openly and prominently in upright positions on rocks, crags, or similar elevated points that command good views of surrounding terrain. Long-legged buzzards also frequently stand and walk on the ground, often in a distinctive waddling manner, making them relatively conspicuous for a large raptor.
Behaviour & Diet
The long-legged buzzard is considered relatively powerful and aggressive for its taxonomic group, yet simultaneously sluggish in overall behavior. Like most buzzards, it primarily hunts small mammals such as rodents—including gerbils, ground squirrels, voles, and rats—though it readily takes reptiles, birds, insects, and carrion as supplementary food sources. The species is a typical buzzard in its reproductive biology and nesting behaviors.
In flight, this raptor demonstrates comparatively slow, deep wing beats and a relatively slow overall flight speed. It frequently hovers for extended periods and regularly soars in wide circles, displaying the characteristic slow, deliberate movements that define its sluggish temperament despite its size and power.
Best Time & Places to See It
As a widely distributed species considered stable in population and rated as Least Concern by the IUCN, the long-legged buzzard can be reliably encountered throughout its extensive range across Southeastern Europe, East Africa, and the northern Indian subcontinent. Look for these birds perched conspicuously on prominent vantage points—rocks, crags, utility poles, and pylons—where they command expansive views of open terrain suitable for hunting. The species' preference for open perching and ground walking makes it relatively approachable compared to more elusive raptors, particularly during midday hours when soaring activity peaks.
Photography Tips
Photograph long-legged buzzards from a distance, as their prominent perching behavior and sluggish temperament allow extended observation opportunities without disturbance. The species' variable plumage morphs provide rich opportunities for documentation; include detailed shots of the head, underparts, and tail patterns to capture the diagnostic features of pale, intermediate, rufous, and dark morphs. The bright rufous-orange to cream-colored tail is particularly distinctive and should be prioritized in your shots.
In-flight photography should emphasize the bird's almost eagle-like silhouette and kinked-wing soaring posture. Capture the pale, whitish tail as it contrasts against the darker body and rear wings—this striking feature is often visible from considerable distances. Document hovering sequences, as the species' frequent and extended hovering periods present excellent opportunities for sharp, detailed flight images showcasing wing structure and underpart patterns.
