ABOUT

Where granite peaks pierce the Bulgarian highlands, ancient beech and conifer forests blanket mountains that rise dramatically from the Balkan range's heart. This wilderness encompasses three distinct ecological zones, each stacked like nature's own architectural marvel. Alpine meadows crown the summits above 2,000 metres, while subalpine scrub gives way to dense spruce and fir forests that cloak the mid-slopes. Deep gorges carved by mineral-rich rivers cut through limestone bedrock, creating microclimates where Mediterranean and continental species converge in an extraordinary botanical mosaic. The terrain demands respect—rugged, unforgiving, and breathtakingly authentic.

Photographers and ornithologists converge here for one compelling reason: the park protects Bulgaria's most significant concentration of birds of prey. Golden eagles, lammergeiers, and lesser spotted eagles command the thermals above open ridge systems, while late spring and early autumn deliver optimal lighting across pristine, undeveloped vistas. Mammal diversity rivals the avifauna—wolves, lynx, and brown bears move through these forests with a freedom increasingly rare across Europe. Access via well-maintained trail networks ensures serious naturalists can reach prime viewing locations without sacrificing the profound sense of isolation this landscape demands.
