El chorlito dorado europeo es un chorlito de tamaño relativamente grande con una constitución característica robusta y alas solo ligeramente más largas que la cola. Su rasgo más llamativo es una banda blanca en forma de "S" que se extiende desde la frente hasta los flancos, lo que lo hace reconocible tanto en plumaje nupcial como en el de no-reproducción. Al distinguir esta especie de sus parientes cercanos, busca las plumas axiares (axilares) blancas visibles en vuelo y cuando el ave estira las alas en el suelo—una diferencia clave con respecto a los chorlitos dorados americano y del Pacífico, que son ligeramente más pequeños, más esbeltos, de patas más largas y poseen plumas grises en lugar de blancas en esta zona.
Distribución y Hábitat
El chorlito dorado europeo se reproduce en un área vastísima que se extiende desde Islandia en occidente hasta la Siberia central en oriente, habitando la tundra ártica y las áreas de páramo. Las poblaciones reproductoras se extienden hacia el sur hasta Gales y Bielorrusia, aunque la especie ha experimentado extinciones locales, incluida la pérdida de una pequeña población en Dartmoor en el suroeste de Inglaterra alrededor de 2010. En invierno, estas aves migran hacia el suroeste a regiones más templadas, distribuidas desde Irlanda y Dinamarca hasta el Mediterráneo, el noroeste de África y el suroeste de Asia, llegando tan lejos como Argelia, el norte de Egipto y la costa del mar Caspio en Irán.
Durante el invierno, el chorlito dorado europeo prefiere paisajes abiertos incluyendo llanuras agrícolas, campos arados y praderas cortas, típicamente en terrenos planos con vegetación moderada cerca de humedales. La especie ocasionalmente ha vagado más allá de su rango normal, con registros de individuos erráticos alcanzando la costa este de Canadá, Gambia, Pakistán e India septentrional. Islandia alberga aproximadamente un tercio de la población mundial y sigue siendo el bastión de la especie.
Comportamiento y Alimentación
El chorlito dorado europeo es altamente gregario durante el invierno, reuniéndose en grandes bandadas en áreas abiertas. Su reclamo es un "tuu" monosilábico característico, ligeramente descendente y melancólico que los viajeros pueden escuchar durante los períodos de migración. En vuelo, el ave muestra un movimiento rápido y poderoso con aleteos regulares, permitiéndole cubrir vastas distancias durante sus migraciones de larga distancia entre los territorios de cría e invernada.
La dieta varía geográficamente en el área de reproducción. En el Reino Unido, los pollos de chorlito dorado dependen fuertemente de las tipúlidas para su nutrición, mientras que en Suecia, las moscas de marzo forman un componente dietético más importante. Esta flexibilidad en las fuentes de alimento ayuda a la especie a adaptarse a diferentes ambientes en su extensísimo rango.

En la cultura islandesa, la llegada del primer chorlito dorado señala el inicio de la primavera y recibe atención significativa en los medios—una tradición que ofrece a los viajeros una oportunidad única de presenciar este momento cultural y observar las aves durante su migración de retorno.
Los visitantes invernales de regiones agrícolas bajas en toda Europa, noroeste de África y suroeste de Asia pueden encontrar grandes bandadas reunidas en llanuras abiertas y praderas. Las regiones costeras desde Irlanda hasta Dinamarca e hacia el sur hasta el Mediterráneo también proporcionan oportunidades confiables de observación invernal, particularmente en áreas con hábitats abiertos adecuados cerca de humedales.
