La gaviota patiamarilla es una gaviota grande, de hasta 66 cm de largo, con los machos notoriamente más grandes que las hembras. Los adultos en plumaje nupcial son aves llamativas: exhiben el dorso y las coberteras alares de color gris claro que contrasta con la cabeza y las partes inferiores blancas. Las puntas de las alas son negras con manchas blancas distintivas llamadas «espejos», y el pico es amarillo brillante con una mancha roja. Un anillo de piel desnuda amarilla rodea el ojo pálido, y las patas son típicamente rosadas, aunque algunos individuos de poblaciones bálticas presentan patas amarillas. Los adultos en plumaje no nupcial desarrollan estrías pardas en la cabeza y el cuello.
Las aves inmaduras son considerablemente diferentes y pueden resultar desafiantes de identificar. Los pollos y aves de primer invierno son principalmente pardos con estrías oscuras, picos oscuros y ojos oscuros. Las aves de segundo invierno muestran la cabeza y las partes inferiores más blancas con menos estriación y el dorso gris. Los individuos de tercer invierno se asemejan estrechamente a los adultos pero retienen algunas plumas pardas en las alas y marcas oscuras en el pico. La especie alcanza el plumaje adulto y la madurez sexual a una edad promedio de cuatro años. Las gaviotas patiamarillas son más grandes que las gaviotas de pico anillado y se distinguen de la gaviota sombrilla por el dorso más oscuro de ésta y sus patas amarillas.
Distribución y Hábitat
La gaviota patiamarilla se reproduce a lo largo de las costas septentrionales y occidentales de Europa. La subespecie nominal, la gaviota escandinava, se reproduce en Escandinavia y el noroeste de Rusia. La gaviota de Europa occidental se reproduce en Islandia, las Islas Feroe, Gran Bretaña, Irlanda, Francia, Bélgica, los Países Bajos y Alemania. Los patrones migratorios varían considerablemente en su distribución: algunas gaviotas patiamarillas, particularmente las residentes en áreas más frías, migran más hacia el sur en invierno, mientras que muchas poblaciones son residentes permanentes, incluyendo las de Irlanda, Gran Bretaña, Islandia y las costas del Mar del Norte.
Comportamiento y Dieta
Las gaviotas patiamarillas son aves ruidosas y gregarias conocidas por sus vocalizaciones distintivas, particularmente su llamada fuerte y ruidosa. Son alimentadoras oportunistas y adaptables con una dieta variada que incluye peces y crustáceos, así como algo de material vegetal. La especie es también una carroñera consumada, consumiendo fácilmente carroña y alimento dejado por humanos o robado de ellos, comportamiento que les ha permitido prosperar en pueblos y ciudades costeros a lo largo de su distribución.
Mejor Época y Lugares para Verla
Los residentes durante todo el año se encuentran en Irlanda, Gran Bretaña, Islandia y a lo largo de las costas del Mar del Norte. Para los viajeros que visitan las costas septentrionales y occidentales de Europa, las gaviotas patiamarillas son abundantes y fáciles de observar. Quienes visiten las costas de Escandinavia y el noroeste de Rusia durante la temporada de reproducción encontrarán la subespecie escandinava más grande, mientras que los visitantes invernales de estas regiones pueden observar poblaciones migratorias. La adaptabilidad de la especie y su naturaleza gregaria hacen que se las observe fácilmente alrededor de puertos, playas, pueblos costeros y fuentes de alimento a lo largo de su distribución.
Consejos de Fotografía
Fotografiar gaviotas patiamarillas ofrece oportunidades gratificantes gracias a su gran tamaño y patrones de plumaje audaces. Los adultos en plumaje nupcial proporcionan las imágenes más llamativas con sus cabezas y cuerpos blancos nítidos contrastando contra dorsos grises y puntas alares negras con espejos blancos. El pico amarillo brillante con su mancha roja y el ojo pálido son características distintivas que vale la pena capturar. Los hábitats costeros —puertos, playas y acantilados— proporcionan excelentes escenarios para la fotografía.
Ten en cuenta que las aves inmaduras requieren identificación cuidadosa; su progresión a través de cuatro años de desarrollo de plumaje ofrece sujetos fotográficos diversos pero puede resultar confusa sin experiencia. Las imágenes de comportamiento de estas aves gregarias y vocales interactuando entre sí o con su entorno pueden ser particularmente atractivas. La luz de primera hora de la mañana en acantilados costeros o puertos iluminará mejor los tonos grises sutiles del dorso y las coberteras alares superiores mientras destaca el patrón striking de puntas alares negras y blancas.
