El tarabilla europea es un pequeño paseriforme que mide 11,5–13 cm de largo y pesa 13–17 g, lo que la hace ligeramente más pequeña que un petirrojo europeo. Ambos sexos son distintivos pero notablemente diferentes en el plumaje. Los machos en plumaje nupcial son espectaculares: partes superiores y cabeza negras con garganta y pecho naranja contrastante, vientre y coberteras infracaudales blancos, y un distintivo semicollar blanco en los costados del cuello. También muestran una pequeña mancha blanca en las coberteras alares y un parche blanco muy pequeño en la rabadilla, a menudo estriado de negro. Las hembras son considerablemente más apagadas, con partes superiores y cabeza pardas, estriaciones pardas oscuras sobre partes inferiores pardo pálido, y carecen de los parches blancos del cuello y la rabadilla de los machos. El único blanco en las hembras es la mancha de las coberteras alares, que a menudo es blanco buffy. Ambos sexos tienen alas distintivamente cortas, más cortas que especies relacionadas como la tarabilla norteña y la tarabilla siberiana.
Las dos subespecies difieren en la intensidad del color: la continental S. r. rubicola es más pálida con parches blancos más grandes, mientras que la costera atlántica S. r. hibernans es pardo más oscuro con menos blanco. La especie toma su nombre común de su llamada distintiva, que suena como dos piedras golpeadas entre sí, mientras que el nombre científico Saxicola significa "habitante de rocas" en latín. Los machos cantan una canción aguda y gorjeante similar a la de un acentor común.
Distribución y Hábitat
La tarabilla europea se encuentra en toda Europa desde las áreas costeras atlánticas en el noroeste de Noruega, Gran Bretaña, Irlanda y noroeste de Francia, extendiéndose hacia el sur a través de Dinamarca, Francia, España y Marruecos, y hacia el este hasta Polonia, Ucrania y Turquía. La especie se divide en dos subespecies débilmente definidas: S. r. hibernans ocupa el noroeste de Europa en regiones costeras atlánticas, mientras que S. r. rubicola cubre el sur y este del área de distribución desde el Mediterráneo hasta el Cáucaso Sur. Las dos subespecies se solapan ampliamente donde sus áreas de distribución se encuentran.
Las tarabillas europeas se reproducen en brezales, dunas costeras y pastizales ásperos con arbustos dispersos pequeños, zarzamoras, aulaga abierta, céspedes o brezo. Son migrantes de corta distancia o no migratorias, aunque las aves de las partes más frías del noreste del área de distribución típicamente se desplazan hacia el sur para invernar en el sur de Europa y norte de África, mientras que otras permanecen residentes todo el año.
Comportamiento y Alimentación
Las tarabillas europeas son monógamas durante la temporada de reproducción pero no se emparejan de por vida, con aves que se reproducen por primera vez al año de edad. La hembra construye el nido completamente, formando una copa suelta sin tejer de pasto seco forrada con pelo y plumas, que coloca en vegetación densa cerca del suelo. Las nidadas típicamente contienen 4–6 huevos azul pálido a azul verdoso con motas rojo parduzco concentradas en el extremo más grande. La hembra incuba los huevos durante 13–14 días comenzando después de que se pone el huevo final, con ambos padres posteriormente cuidando y alimentando a los pollos. Los pollos empluman 12–16 días después de eclosionar y continúan recibiendo cuidado parental durante 4–5 días adicionales, después de los cuales la hembra puede comenzar a construir un nuevo nido para otra nidada mientras el macho continúa alimentando a los volantones.
Mejor Época y Lugares para Observarla
Las tarabillas europeas son residentes todo el año en gran parte de su área de distribución, aunque las poblaciones se desplazan estacionalmente. En el noroeste de Europa, la subespecie residente hibernans se puede encontrar durante todo el año, particularmente en áreas costeras del Reino Unido, Irlanda y noroeste de Francia. La subespecie continental rubicola se observa mejor durante la temporada de reproducción en hábitats de brezales y pastizales en el sur y centro de Europa. Los visitantes invernales del norte llegan al sur de Europa y norte de África durante los meses más fríos, haciendo que las regiones mediterráneas y las áreas de invernada del norte de África sean productivas en invierno.

Las tarabillas europeas macho en plumaje nupcial son sujetos altamente fotogénicos con contraste llamativo entre negro, naranja y blanco. Los machos se posan abiertamente en arbustos bajos y perchas prominentes, haciéndolos accesibles para fotógrafos. La luz de primera hora de la mañana enfatiza el brillo de su pecho naranja y los parches del collar blanco. El hábito característico de la especie de cambiar frecuentemente de perchas en vegetación baja permite anticipar y encuadrar tomas. Las hembras y aves en plumaje no nupcial son más apagadas y requieren paciencia, pero su plumaje sutil proporciona oportunidades gratificantes para retratos detallados. El pequeño tamaño de la especie y su preferencia por hábitats abiertos con vegetación dispersa significa que obtener imágenes claras y sin obstáculos es a menudo alcanzable con teleobjetivos moderados.
