El ánsar egipcio es una anátida de tamaño mediano, que mide entre 63 y 73 cm de largo y pesa entre 1.500 y 2.348 g. Los machos suelen ser algo más grandes que las hembras, aunque ambos sexos presentan el mismo plumaje. La especie muestra una variación considerable en la coloración, siendo algunos individuos más grises y otros más pardos, variación que no está relacionada con el sexo ni la edad. Un rasgo distintivo es la gran extensión de blanco en las alas de los adultos, que permanece oculta por las coberteras alares cuando el ave está en reposo pero se despliega de forma prominente cuando el ánsar se alarma o muestra agresividad. El ánsar egipcio nada bien y aparenta ser pesado en vuelo, moviéndose más como un ánsar que como un pato, lo que justifica su nombre común.
Las vocalizaciones de machos y hembras difieren notablemente. Los machos producen un graznido áspero y sordo parecido al del pato que rara vez emiten a menos que el ave esté excitada, así como una llamada más fuerte y soplada emitida en rápida sucesión, que recuerda a una locomotora de vapor. Las hembras tienen un graznido mucho más ruidoso y áspero, frecuentemente escuchado cuando atienden a los pollos o muestran agresividad. Durante el cortejo, los machos realizan un elaborado y ruidoso despliegue que incluye graznidos, estiramientos de cuello y exhibiciones de plumas para atraer parejas.
Distribución y Hábitat
El ánsar egipcio es nativo del África subsahariana y del Valle del Nilo, donde se mantiene ampliamente distribuido y es común a abundante, aunque se ha vuelto escaso en el norte del Valle del Nilo. La especie habita en hábitats abiertos o semibiertos típicamente cerca de agua dulce, desde tierras bajas hasta los 4.000 m sobre el nivel del mar en las Tierras Altas de Etiopía. Está ampliamente ausente de bosques densos y desiertos. Fuera de la época reproductiva, los ánsares egipcios se dispersan más ampliamente, a veces realizando migraciones más largas hacia el norte penetrando en las áridas regiones del Sahel, y ocasionalmente llegando a los países norteafricanos de Argelia y Túnez.
Más allá de su distribución africana nativa, el ánsar egipcio ha sido introducido en Europa, Estados Unidos y otros lugares, principalmente por su popularidad como ave ornamental. La especie estuvo históricamente presente en el sureste de Europa hasta principios del siglo XVIII y en partes de Turquía y Oriente Medio occidental hasta principios del siglo XX. En Gran Bretaña, los ánsares egipcios se remontan a introducciones del siglo XVII en fincas y parques, y la especie ahora se encuentra principalmente en East Anglia y a lo largo del Támesis. A partir de introducciones en Países Bajos en 1967 y Bélgica en 1982, la especie ha experimentado una expansión de rango relativamente rápida por toda Europa continental, dispersándose hacia Alemania, Francia y posteriormente hacia la República Checa, Dinamarca, Luxemburgo, Suiza y otros países.
Comportamiento y Alimentación
Los ánsares egipcios en estado salvaje pueden vivir hasta 15 años, mientras que los individuos en cautiverio han sido registrados alcanzando una edad de 35 años. En su hábitat británico introducido, la especie se reproduce en sitios que ofrecen agua abierta, hierba corta y localizaciones de nidificación adecuadas como islas, oquedades en árboles viejos, o entre brotes epicórmicos en árboles antiguos. Durante los meses invernales, se dispersan ampliamente en los valles fluviales, donde se alimentan de hierba corta y cereales, convirtiéndose en forrajeadores adaptables en paisajes agrícolas.

Para aquellos que deseen observar al ánsar egipcio en su rango nativo, el África subsahariana y el Valle del Nilo ofrecen las mejores oportunidades, donde la especie se mantiene ampliamente distribuida y es común a abundante. En Europa, las poblaciones introducidas pueden encontrarse de forma fiable en Gran Bretaña, particularmente en East Anglia y a lo largo del Támesis, donde se reproducen e invernan. Durante los meses invernales, las poblaciones dispersas son más visibles ampliamente en valles fluviales a lo largo de su distribución europea.

Las manchas blancas dramáticas de las alas del ánsar egipcio ofrecen excelentes oportunidades fotográficas, particularmente cuando el ave se alarma o muestra agresividad y extiende sus alas. Los fotógrafos deben posicionarse cerca de agua abierta, hierba corta y hábitats de nidificación adecuados como ríos arbolados o islas para capturar la especie en su ambiente preferido. El estilo de vuelo pesado tipo ánsar de la especie ofrece oportunidades fotográficas distintivas en vuelo. La luz del amanecer o del atardecer a lo largo de valles fluviales durante los períodos de dispersión invernal iluminará mejor los tonos variables del plumaje del ave y sus características distintivas.
