La perdiz nival es un urogallo de tamaño medio que mide 34–36 cm de largo con una envergadura de 54–60 cm, lo que la hace aproximadamente un diez por ciento más pequeña que su pariente cercano, la perdiz salicina. Su característica más llamativa es su camuflaje estacional: en invierno, el plumaje se vuelve casi completamente blanco excepto por las plumas exteriores de la cola negras y una línea ocular negra, mientras que en primavera y verano el ave muda a tonos grises y pardos. El macho reproductor muestra partes superiores grisáceas con alas y partes inferiores blancas, y puede identificarse por su pico esbelto y las regiones loral negras (el área entre el ojo y el pico), que están ausentes en la perdiz salicina.
Distribución y hábitat
Esta especie sedentaria se reproduce en las regiones árticas y subárticas de Eurasia y América del Norte, incluyendo Groenlandia, habitando laderas rocosas y tundra. Su rango se extiende desde Noruega y Suecia hacia el este hasta el Lejano Oriente siberiano, y mantiene poblaciones aisladas en las montañas de Escocia, los Pirineos, los Alpes, Bulgaria, los Urales, las montañas del Pamir, las montañas del Altái y Japón (donde se restringe a los Alpes Japoneses y el Monte Haku). La perdiz nival prefiere elevaciones más altas y hábitats más áridos que la perdiz salicina.
Comportamiento y dieta
Los machos de perdiz nival son muy vocales durante la época de reproducción, produciendo ronquidos y traqueteos guturales dirigidos a machos rivales. Sus exhibiciones de cortejo aéreo son espectaculares: los machos realizan vuelos rápidos hacia adelante con alas que baten velozmente seguidos de un planeo ascendente con la cola abierta, durante el cual emiten un llamado áspero que frecuentemente se compara con un palo siendo arrastrado sobre una valla de estacas. En tierra, los machos defienden territorios mediante vocalizaciones y persecuciones, siendo los conflictos físicos raros. También hacen señales con la cola abierta, el cuello extendido y las alas bajadas mientras rodean a las hembras receptivas. La pequeña población en la Tierra de Francisco José sobrevive alimentándose de la vegetación abundante que se encuentra en y bajo acantilados altos donde se reúnen colonias de aves marinas en verano.
Mejor época y lugares para observarla
Debido a su hábitat remoto en laderas rocosas y tundra, la perdiz nival tiene pocos depredadores naturales y puede ser sorprendentemente accesible. Las ubicaciones principales para observarla incluyen las regiones árticas de Canadá (particularmente Nunavut), Escandinavia y Siberia. Las cordilleras como los Alpes, los Pirineos y los Alpes Japoneses también albergan poblaciones. Los cambios de plumaje estacional del ave hacen que la primavera y el verano sean ideales para observar la transición de coloración blanca a gris-parda.

En invierno, su plumaje blanco se mimetiza perfectamente con los paisajes nevados—la paciencia y el posicionamiento cuidadoso son esenciales para captar detalle sobre fondos pálidos. El plumaje de verano ofrece mejores oportunidades de contraste contra el terreno rocoso. La sorprendente accesibilidad del ave y sus espectaculares exhibiciones de cortejo aéreo hacen que la época de reproducción sea particularmente gratificante para la fotografía. Las tomas de gran angular que capturan el árido paisaje de tundra complementan los primeros planos de la transición estacional llamativa del ave y sus distintivas plumas de la cola y línea ocular negras.
