Es una de las gaviotas más comunes y más cosmopolitas del mundo. Ave migradora, se encuentra desde Groenlandia y Escandinavia hasta el Norte de África, donde hiberna. También se pueden ver hibernando en las costas norteamericanas a ejemplares procedentes de Islandia.
