El porrón pardo es un gran pato buceador con dimorfismo sexual muy marcado. El macho adulto es inconfundible, con la cabeza redondeada de color naranja, pico rojo brillante y pecho negro. Sus flancos son blancos, el dorso es marrón y la cola negra. Esta combinación de colores hace que los machos sean inconfundibles incluso a distancia. La hembra es considerablemente más discreta, de color marrón pálido general con dorso y corona más oscuros, aunque conserva una cara distintivamente blanquecina. Los machos en eclipse se parecen a las hembras pero conservan su característico pico rojo, lo que proporciona un rasgo útil de identificación durante esta fase de muda transicional.
Distribución y Hábitat
El porrón pardo se reproduce en marismas y lagos de las tierras bajas del sur de Europa, con su área de distribución extendiéndose desde las estepas y zonas semidesérticas alrededor del Mar Negro hasta Asia Central y Mongolia. Son parcialmente migradores, con poblaciones que invernan en el subcontinente indio y en África. Las aves reproductoras del norte típicamente invernan más al sur, en el norte de África. En las Islas Británicas, el estatus de la especie es complicado por numerosos escapes históricos y liberaciones deliberadas de cautividad, aunque la mayoría de los individuos presentes se cree ahora que resultan de tales introducciones más que de migración natural. Donde ocurren naturalmente, son más numerosos en áreas como Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire y Leicestershire.
Comportamiento y Alimentación
El porrón pardo son aves notablemente gregarias, formando grandes bandadas durante el invierno, frecuentemente mezclándose libremente con otros patos buceadores como el porrón común. Su comportamiento alimenticio es flexible: obtienen alimento tanto buceando como filtrando, y típicamente se voltean en busca de alimento más frecuentemente que la mayoría de otros patos buceadores. Su dieta consiste principalmente en plantas acuáticas. Los machos producen un distintivo reclamo nasal "veht", mientras que las hembras emiten series de reclamos roncos "vrah-vrah-vrah", haciéndolos audibles incluso cuando no se los observa directamente.
Mejor Época y Lugares para Verlo
El invierno es la mejor época para observar al porrón pardo, particularmente en áreas donde se congregan grandes bandadas. En su área de distribución natural, las marismas y lagos de las tierras bajas del sur de Europa y Asia Central ofrecen las mejores oportunidades. Para quienes estén en las Islas Británicas, las visitas invernales a lugares tradicionales en Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire y Northamptonshire proporcionan los avistamientos más fiables, especialmente donde se reúnen en bandadas mixtas con otros patos buceadores.
Consejos para Fotografía
El plumaje vibrante del macho —la cabeza naranja radiante y pico rojo contrastando con marcas negras y blancas— lo convierte en un sujeto excepcionalmente fotogénico, particularmente con buena luz. Las bandadas invernales proporcionan oportunidades para capturar comportamientos, incluyendo secuencias de buceo y la característica postura de volteo utilizada durante la alimentación. El contraste entre el plumaje llamativo del macho y el más sutil de la hembra permite composiciones comparativas interesantes. La luz del amanecer realzará mejor el brillo metálico de la cabeza del macho.
