La gallina de Guinea crestada es un galliforme grande y distintivo, que mide entre 53 y 58 cm de largo y pesa alrededor de 1,3 kg. Su característica más reconocible es la cabeza pequeña y desnuda coronada con una protuberancia ósea opaca amarillenta o rojiza llamada casco, complementada por piel facial desnuda que exhibe tonos rojo, azul o negro. El cuerpo es robusto y redondeado, cubierto de plumaje gris oscuro moteado de blanco. Las alas y la cola son notablemente cortas y redondeadas, lo que le da al ave una silueta compacta. Las nueve subespecies reconocidas muestran una variación considerable en el tamaño, forma y coloración del casco y las carúnculas faciales, haciendo que algunas poblaciones sean notablemente distintas en apariencia.
Distribución y Hábitat
Nativa de África, predominantemente al sur del Sahara, la gallina de Guinea crestada ha sido ampliamente introducida como especie domesticada en todo el mundo, incluyendo las Antillas, América del Norte, Colombia, Brasil, Australia y Europa. Poblaciones asilvestradas descendientes de rebaños domésticos ahora se encuentran en muchas de estas regiones. En su estado natural, se reproducen en hábitats cálidos, bastante secos y abiertos caracterizados por arbustos y árboles dispersos, como sabanas y tierras agrícolas.
Comportamiento y Alimentación
Estas son aves altamente gregarias, que forman bandadas de aproximadamente 25 individuos durante la temporada no reproductiva y se posan en comunidad. A pesar de tener alas cortas y redondeadas adecuadas solo para vuelo explosivo y de corta duración, las gallinas de Guinea crestadas son notablemente terrestres y pueden caminar 10 km o más diariamente, dependiendo del vuelo planeo para distancias mayores. Tienden a correr en lugar de volar cuando se alarman, y emiten llamadas fuertes y ásperas cuando se disturban. Sus cuerpos están excepcionalmente bien adaptados para correr sobre terreno accidentado a gran velocidad.
Su dieta es altamente variada y cambia estacionalmente. Fuera de la temporada de reproducción, consumen maíz, tubérculos, semillas —particularmente de malezas agrícolas— y granos derramados. Durante la temporada de reproducción, más del 80 por ciento de su dieta consiste en invertebrados, especialmente artrópodos como escarabajos. Como las gallinas domésticas, escarban en suelo suelto en busca de alimento usando sus garras fuertes, aunque rara vez arrancan plantas en crecimiento. Pueden vivir hasta 12 años en estado salvaje. Los machos son notablemente agresivos entre sí, participando en peleas feroces que pueden causar lesiones, acompañadas de despliegues de alas levantadas y amenazas de pico abierto.
Mejor Época y Lugares para Verla
El verano representa la temporada de reproducción máxima en hábitats africanos. Los viajeros deben enfocarse en paisajes cálidos, secos y abiertos con vegetación dispersa —las sabanas y tierras agrícolas ofrecen las mejores oportunidades. En su rango nativo al sur del Sahara, estas aves son relativamente comunes en hábitats adecuados. Fuera de África, las poblaciones asilvestradas en Europa, América del Norte y Australia pueden encontrarse, aunque los avistamientos pueden ser menos predecibles. Las primeras horas de la mañana y las últimas de la tarde a menudo proporcionan las mejores oportunidades de observación, ya que son períodos de alimentación activa.

Su tendencia a correr en lugar de volar significa que las perspectivas a nivel del suelo pueden ser efectivas. Capture la postura característica y el detalle ornamental del casco posicionándose delante de aves forrajeando. Las aves son particularmente fotogénicas durante despliegues agresivos, cuando los machos levantan sus alas y erizan sus plumas. El contraste entre sus cuerpos oscuros y moteados y la piel facial colorida exige un cuidadoso ajuste de exposición. La luz temprana realza los motas blancas sutiles contra el plumaje gris oscuro y resalta la coloración facial. La paciencia y un objetivo más largo (300 mm o mayor) son esenciales, ya que estas aves gregarias pero cautelosas tomarán vuelo si se les aproxima demasiado.
