El porrón tufado es un pequeño pato buceador fácilmente reconocible por sus características distintivas. Los machos son llamativos, con plumaje completamente negro contrastado por los flancos blancos y el pico azul grisáceo con ojos amarillo dorado. La característica más identificable es la prominente cresta en la parte posterior de la cabeza, de la que deriva el nombre de la especie. Las hembras son pardas con flancos más claros y pueden ser más difíciles de identificar, aunque algunos individuos presentan blanco alrededor de la base del pico. Esta marca blanca puede causar confusión con especies de porrones, pero nunca es tan extensa como en esos patos, y los porrones tufados carecen de la característica cresta. La especie es monotípica, lo que significa que no existen subespecies reconocidas.
Las vocalizaciones proporcionan pistas útiles para la identificación. El reclamo de la hembra es un áspero y gruñidor «karr» que generalmente emite en vuelo, mientras que los machos permanecen en silencio la mayor parte del tiempo excepto durante el cortejo, cuando producen un simple silbido «wit-oo». Estos reclamos distinguen al porrón tufado de especies similares como los porrones bastardos y porrones moñudos, que carecen de la cresta y emiten reclamos completamente diferentes.
Distribución y hábitat
El porrón tufado se encuentra en toda Eurasia templada y boreal, con una población mundial de casi un millón de aves. La especie es parcialmente migratoria, con la mayoría de poblaciones migrando hacia regiones más templadas para invernar en el sur y oeste de Europa y Asia meridional, mientras que las poblaciones de las Islas Británicas permanecen durante todo el año. En invierno, los porrones tufados forman grandes bandadas en aguas abiertas. Ocasionalmente, individuos aparecen como visitantes invernales en ambas costas de América del Norte, y un registro excepcional documenta un ave llegando tan al sur como Melbourne, Australia.
La especie ha expandido su rango en las últimas décadas, se cree que debido a la mayor disponibilidad de aguas abiertas por extracción de grava y la proliferación de mejillones de agua dulce, una fuente de alimento favorita. El hábitat de cría consiste en áreas cercanas a marismas y lagos con abundante vegetación para ocultar nidos. También habitan lagunas costeras, líneas de costa y estanques protegidos.
Comportamiento y dieta
Los porrones tufados se alimentan principalmente buceando, aunque ocasionalmente se voltean desde la superficie del agua. Su dieta consiste principalmente en moluscos e insectos acuáticos, complementados con algo de material vegetal. Se sabe que se alimentan tanto de noche como durante las horas diurnas. La especie típicamente cría entre mediados de mayo y finales de julio en el norte de Europa. Los nidos son construidos por las hembras en depresiones forradas de hierba, juncos y plumón, prefiriéndose los sitios en islas. Las puestas constan de 8–11 huevos de color gris verdoso que eclosionan de forma sincrónica después de alrededor de 25 días de incubación. Los pollos son precoces y nidífugos, capaces de alimentarse por sí solos, y típicamente vuelan entre 45 y 50 días de edad. La mayoría de individuos crían por primera vez a los un año de edad, aunque algunos lo hacen a los dos años.
Mejor época y lugares para verlo
El invierno es la estación óptima para observar porrones tufados, ya que se reúnen en grandes bandadas en aguas abiertas a lo largo de su rango invernal en Europa, las Islas Británicas y Asia meridional. El sur y oeste más templado de Europa ofrecen oportunidades de observación confiables. Los observadores en América del Norte ocasionalmente pueden divisar porrones tufados en ambas costas durante los meses de invierno. Para quienes estén interesados en el comportamiento reproductor y la anidación, visitar las regiones templadas y boreales de Eurasia durante la estación de cría de mayo a julio sería gratificante, aunque los nidos típicamente están ocultos entre la vegetación de marismas y lagos.

El fuerte contraste entre el plumaje negro de los machos y los flancos blancos crea oportunidades fotográficas impactantes, particularmente al capturar la característica cresta de la cabeza de perfil. El pico azul grisáceo de los machos y los ojos amarillo dorado son características distintivas que merecen destacarse en primeros planos. Las hembras presentan un mayor desafío debido a su coloración parda y marcas sutiles, requiriendo paciencia y buena iluminación para capturar detalles identificables como el blanco alrededor de la base del pico. El comportamiento de agrupación invernal proporciona oportunidades para composiciones a gran escala mostrando múltiples aves en aguas abiertas. La luz de primera hora de la mañana y al atardecer revelará mejor las variaciones tonales sutiles en el plumaje de las hembras y realzará los reflejos en el agua.
