Argentina

Occupying much of southern South America, Argentina is one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife destinations, stretching from the subtropical rainforests of Misiones to the glaciers and windswept steppes of Patagonia, and from the towering Andes to the rich waters of the South Atlantic Ocean. The country’s geography creates an exceptional range of ecosystems. Northern Argentina is home to the vast wetlands of Iberá National Park, one of South America’s greatest conservation success stories, where Capybaras, Marsh Deer, Giant Anteaters, Jaguars and hundreds of bird species thrive. The subtropical Atlantic Forest surrounding Iguazú National Park shelters iconic species such as the Jaguar, South American Tapir, Black-fronted Piping Guan and Toco Toucan.

Further west, the Andes dominate the landscape with high-altitude deserts, volcanic plateaus and puna grasslands inhabited by Vicuñas, Guanacos, Andean Condors and elegant flamingos feeding in colourful salt lagoons. Central Argentina is characterised by the Pampas, one of the world’s largest temperate grasslands, supporting rheas, foxes and a rich diversity of raptors and waterbirds.

Patagonia represents one of the country’s greatest wildlife treasures. Vast open steppes provide habitat for Guanacos, Lesser Rheas, Patagonian Foxes and the elusive Puma, while the snow-capped peaks of Los Glaciares National Park and the iconic Torres del Paine region nearby offer some of the world’s finest opportunities to observe wild Pumas in breathtaking mountain scenery.

Argentina’s coastline is equally remarkable. The Valdés Peninsula is internationally recognised as one of the finest marine wildlife destinations on Earth, where Southern Right Whales arrive annually to breed and calve close to shore. Southern Elephant Seals, South American Sea Lions, Orcas and Commerson’s Dolphins are regularly observed, while Magellanic Penguins form enormous breeding colonies along the Patagonian coast.

Birdwatching in Argentina is exceptional, with more than 1,000 recorded bird species. The majestic Andean Condor soars above mountain ranges, while colourful flamingos inhabit Andean wetlands and rheas roam the Patagonian plains. Wetlands, forests, deserts and coastal ecosystems each support their own remarkable bird communities, making Argentina one of the richest birding destinations in the Americas.

Wildlife can be enjoyed throughout the year, although the best season depends on the region. Spring and summer bring abundant breeding activity across Patagonia, while winter offers excellent whale watching along the Atlantic coast. The northern wetlands and subtropical forests remain rewarding year-round.
