Germany
Germany is one of Central Europe’s most important wildlife destinations, offering a remarkable combination of ancient forests, mountain ranges, wetlands, river systems, and traditional rural landscapes. Although it is one of Europe’s most densely populated countries, Germany has successfully preserved and restored many natural areas that support an impressive diversity of wildlife.
The country is particularly known for the return of several iconic species. Wolves have naturally recolonized large parts of eastern and northern Germany, while Eurasian Lynx populations are slowly recovering in regions such as the Harz Mountains and the Bavarian Forest. These conservation success stories have made Germany an increasingly attractive destination for wildlife enthusiasts hoping to observe Europe’s most elusive predators.
Germany is also a premier birdwatching destination. Its wetlands and coastal areas host large numbers of migratory birds, including Common Cranes, White Storks, and geese that gather in spectacular numbers during migration seasons. Raptors such as the White-tailed Eagle, Golden Eagle, and Peregrine Falcon are among the country’s most sought-after bird species.
Large mammals including Red Deer, Roe Deer, Wild Boar, Moose, European Beaver, and European Otter can be found across various habitats, from extensive forests to river valleys and wetlands.
Combining successful conservation efforts, rich biodiversity, excellent infrastructure, and easily accessible natural areas, Germany offers outstanding opportunities for wildlife observation, birdwatching, and nature photography throughout the year.
