El género Sylvilagus, al que pertenece este conejo, incluye a los conejos de cola de algodón. Es más pequeño que otras especies. Vive en los matorrrales áridos del centro norte de Estados Unidos, en el desierto de Sonora y hasta Tehuacán, México.
