Es el mayor mamífero del continente asiático. Su distribución original se extiende desde el sur de China e Indonesia occidental hasta las costas del golfo Pérsico y el sur de Mesopotamia, donde desapareció ya en el Neolítico. En la actualidad se circunscribe a Sri Lanka, sur y noreste de la India, Bangladés, Indochina, Malaca, Sumatra y noreste de Borneo. Se encuentra tanto en estado salvaje como doméstico y es muy frecuente en zoos y circos. Está considerado como una especie en peligro de extinción.
