Plains Zebra

Identification

The plains zebra is the most recognizable of Africa's three zebra species, standing intermediate in size between the larger Grévy's zebra and the smaller mountain zebra. Adults stand 127–140 cm at the shoulder with a head-body length of 217–246 cm, males weighing 220–322 kg and females 175–250 kg. The species is distinguished by its relatively short legs, thicker neck (especially in males), and characteristic broad black and white stripes that are wider than those of its cousins. The stripes run vertically on the front of the body and tend toward the horizontal on the hindquarters.

No two plains zebras have identical stripe patterns, making individual recognition possible for photographers and researchers. A distinctive feature is the species' shorter, rounded ears compared to mountain zebras, and its narrower ears relative to Grévy's zebras. Like all zebras, plains zebras possess an erect mane and a tufted tail. Northern populations display narrower and more defined striping, while southern populations show more variable and less extensive striping patterns.

Range & Habitat

The plains zebra is the most common and geographically widespread zebra species, with a fragmented range spanning much of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. The species generally inhabits treeless grasslands and savanna woodlands in both tropical and temperate zones, though its habitat is not exclusively limited to these environments. Plains zebras typically avoid deserts, dense rainforests, and permanent wetlands.

Despite their widespread distribution, plains zebras face predation from lions and spotted hyenas as primary threats, with Nile crocodiles, leopards, cheetahs, and African wild dogs also preying on the species. Notably, in areas where plains zebras are sympatric with Grévy's zebras, the two species frequently share the same herds, and fertile hybrids occasionally occur between them.

Behaviour & Diet

Plains zebras are highly social animals, typically organizing into harems consisting of a single stallion, several mares, and their recent offspring. Bachelor groups also form among males, and multiple groups may congregate to form larger herds. This social structure provides safety benefits; zebras keep constant watch for predators and communicate danger through barking or snorting calls, with the harem stallion actively defending his group against predators.

Best Time & Places to See It

Plains zebras remain common in game reserves throughout their range, making them readily observable in many protected areas across southern and eastern Africa. Their presence in grassland and savanna habitats makes them relatively easy to locate compared to more elusive species, particularly in areas where they form stable herds.

Photography Tips

The plains zebra's bold black and white striping provides striking photographic subjects with natural contrast. Photographers should note that stripe patterns vary considerably between individuals and populations; capturing these unique patterns can make compelling images. The species' gregarious nature means that group photographs showcasing harem dynamics or bachelor groups are often possible. During predator-alert moments, when zebras bark or snort, behavioural photography becomes especially rewarding.
