A 4–5 hour jeep safari from Mela Kothi – Chambal Safari Lodge into the low-lying wetlands north of the Yamuna, in search of Sarus Cranes and other wetland birds.
The Sarus Crane Conservation Reserve begins around 30 km from the Lodge and extends for roughly 100 km. It is a widespread wetland area interspersed with cultivated fields, and the breeding ground of the largest congregation of Sarus Cranes in India. It is not a formal protected area, but since 1999 the Supreme Court has designated it a reserve with restrictions on development, in recognition of its importance as a habitat.
The safari involves some walking and is recommended for serious birdwatchers. Alongside the cranes, look out for Black-necked and Painted Storks, and wintering Bar-headed Geese and Ruddy Shelducks.
Price: Rs. 5,050 + 5% GST per person (Rs. 5,303 including tax).
