FALKLAND ISLANDS

Located in the South Atlantic Ocean around 500 kilometres east of the coast of Patagonia, the Falkland Islands are one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife destinations. Comprising more than 700 islands, this remote British Overseas Territory is internationally renowned for its extraordinary seabird colonies, abundant marine mammals, and pristine coastal landscapes. Birdwatching is another major attraction. More than 220 bird species have been recorded, including numerous breeding seabirds and several endemic species. The majestic Black-browed Albatross nests in globally important colonies, while the endemic Cobb’s Wren, Falkland Steamer Duck, and Striated Caracara are among the islands’ most sought-after birds. Large numbers of Imperial Cormorants, skuas, petrels, geese, and shorebirds complete an extraordinarily diverse avifauna.

Unlike many wildlife destinations, the Falkland Islands allow exceptionally close and ethical wildlife encounters. Most animals have evolved with very little fear of humans, enabling outstanding photography opportunities without disturbing natural behaviour. Visitors can often observe penguins, albatrosses, sea lions, and elephant seals from only a few metres away while following responsible wildlife viewing guidelines.

The wildlife calendar varies throughout the year. Spring and summer, from October to March, represent the peak season, when penguins return to breed, albatrosses nest, and elephant seals gather on the beaches. Winter offers dramatic coastal scenery, quieter landscapes, and opportunities to observe resident birdlife in a more tranquil setting.
