This slender strip of beach and adjacent lowland terrain sits within the Aw climate zone, where winter brings a pronounced dry season that transforms the landscape into a semi-arid patchwork of deciduous woodland, thorny scrub, and salt-tolerant vegetation adapted to seasonal water stress. During the wetter months, ephemeral streams flow toward the ocean, and the forest canopy greens dramatically; but from December through April, the refuge becomes a study in resource scarcity and survival, where plants shed leaves and animals concentrate near remaining water sources. The sanctuary's true wealth lies in its fauna: resident and migratory shorebirds forage along the shoreline and in shallow lagoons, waders probe the sandy flats, and raptors patrol the open country in search of small mammals and reptiles that have learned to thrive in this seasonally harsh environment. Nocturnal mammals and ground-dwelling birds are well represented, and the refuge's mix of coastal and terrestrial habitats supports a web of interdependent species adapted to feast during abundance and endure during scarcity.
For wildlife photographers and keen birders, Ostional offers a compelling window into dry-forest ecology and shorebird behaviour that few other Central American sanctuaries can match. The winter dry season—counterintuitively the best time to visit—strips away vegetation and concentrates wildlife around reliable water sources, making observation and photography far easier than during the green months. The low-angle golden light of the dry season, combined with clear skies and minimal rain, creates ideal conditions for long days afield and sharp images. Access is straightforward for those willing to explore on foot or with local guides; the refuge rewards patient observation with intimate encounters between predator and prey, and sustained study of the intricate behaviours that sustain life in a landscape where every drop of water, every seed, and every moment of shade becomes precious.
