Guatemala is one of Central America’s richest wildlife destinations, where ancient rainforests, volcanic highlands, cloud forests and tropical wetlands support an extraordinary diversity of birds and mammals. Despite its relatively small size, the country lies within the Mesoamerican Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the most biologically important regions on Earth. From the vast lowland forests of the Maya Biosphere Reserve to the mist-covered mountains of the Sierra de las Minas and the volcanic landscapes surrounding Lake Atitlán, Guatemala offers an exceptional variety of habitats that harbour hundreds of wildlife species.

The country’s tropical forests are home to some of the Neotropics’ most iconic mammals, including the elusive Jaguar, Baird’s Tapir, Puma, Ocelot, Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey, Mantled Howler Monkey and White-lipped Peccary. Many of these species survive within large protected areas such as Tikal National Park, Laguna del Tigre National Park and the Maya Biosphere Reserve, which together form one of the largest remaining expanses of tropical rainforest in Central America.

Guatemala is particularly renowned among birdwatchers, with more than 700 recorded bird species and several regional endemics. The country’s cloud forests provide habitat for the spectacular Resplendent Quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird and one of the world’s most sought-after wildlife species. Other highlights include the colourful Keel-billed Toucan, Highland Guan, Horned Guan, Lovely Cotinga, Blue-throated Motmot, Ocellated Turkey, and a remarkable diversity of hummingbirds, tanagers, trogons and raptors. During migration, millions of North American birds also pass through or overwinter in Guatemala, making it an outstanding destination throughout much of the year.

Whether exploring the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal surrounded by rainforest wildlife, searching for quetzals in the cloud forests of Biotopo del Quetzal, or venturing into the remote jungles of Petén in search of jaguars and tapirs, Guatemala offers one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in Central America, combining exceptional biodiversity, dramatic landscapes and a rich cultural heritage.
