Nestled between Europe and Asia, Georgia is one of the Caucasus region’s greatest hidden gems for wildlife enthusiasts. Although best known for its dramatic mountain scenery and rich cultural heritage, the country also boasts remarkable biodiversity thanks to its varied landscapes, ranging from the snow-covered peaks of the Greater Caucasus to ancient temperate rainforests, alpine meadows, semi-arid steppes and subtropical wetlands along the Black Sea coast. Smaller mammals such as European Otters, Wildcats and Golden Jackals are also widespread.

Birdwatching is equally rewarding. Georgia lies on one of the world’s major migration corridors, where hundreds of thousands of raptors funnel through the Batumi Bottleneck each autumn. During peak migration, massive numbers of Honey Buzzards, Black Kites, Steppe Buzzards and other birds of prey pass overhead. Mountain forests support species such as the Caucasian Grouse, Wallcreeper and White-throated Dipper, while wetlands host pelicans, herons and numerous waterbirds throughout the year.

The country’s diverse climate allows wildlife observation in every season. Spring brings breeding birds and flowering alpine meadows, while autumn offers spectacular raptor migration and vibrant forest colours. Summer provides excellent access to high mountain habitats, and winter reveals snow-covered landscapes where hardy alpine species continue to thrive.

Despite its extraordinary natural heritage, Georgia remains one of Europe’s least crowded wildlife destinations.
