Natural Serranía de los Churumbelos National Park

Where the western cordillera of Colombia rises toward the Pacific watershed, the Serranía de los Churumbelos unfolds across more than 3,200 square kilometers of some of the country's most rugged and biodiverse terrain. This national park, straddling the departments of Cauca and Nariño, encompasses a dramatic landscape of steep cloud forest ridges, rushing river valleys, and high-altitude páramo grasslands that climb toward 3,600 meters. The park's geographical position—bridging tropical lowland forests with temperate montane zones—creates a remarkable mosaic of ecological communities, each with its own complement of adapted wildlife. In the humid lower slopes, mossy forests drip with epiphytes and ferns, supporting populations of small forest mammals, canopy-dwelling primates, and an extraordinary diversity of forest birds adapted to the perpetual mist. Higher elevations transition to stunted woodland and windswept páramo, where ground-dwelling birds and high-altitude specialists navigate the thin air and seasonal rains. Streams throughout the park support amphibian communities that thrive in the cool, clean water, while birds of prey circle above the ridges, hunting across multiple vegetation zones.
