Omo National Park

Where the Omo River carves through southwestern Ethiopia, a landscape of riverine woodland, acacia savanna, and scattered grassland unfolds across one of East Africa's most remote national parks. The terrain here is shaped by the river's seasonal rhythms—gallery forests line the water's edge while thornbush scrubland extends into drier uplands, creating a mosaic of habitats that support a distinctive assemblage of wildlife adapted to this semi-arid zone. The dry season from December to March brings animals toward remaining water sources, concentrating wildlife and offering the clearest skies for photography, though the wet season's greening transforms the landscape and brings migratory birds and breeding activity. Access remains deliberately limited—the park has minimal infrastructure and requires serious commitment to reach—but that very remoteness is its greatest draw.
