The waters here merge temperate Atlantic currents with polar ice floes, generating a collision of climates that sustains one of the North Atlantic's most productive marine ecosystems. The bay itself—ringed by granite cliffs, tundra plateaux, and the calving face of Sermeq Kujalleq glacier—harbours a dynamic mix of habitats that shift with the seasons. Kelp forests fringe the shallows; open water hosts migratory fish stocks that draw seabirds in spectacular concentrations. The terrestrial margins support low-growing tundra vegetation adapted to permafrost and wind, home to small mammals, predatory birds of prey, and seabirds that nest on cliff faces and rocky outcrops. In spring and early summer, the bay becomes a nursery—breeding grounds for waders, waterfowl, and alcids that arrive from wintering grounds across the Atlantic. The visible landscape itself is the draw: sculptural icebergs drift through dark water; midnight sun illuminates terrain that lies dormant for much of the year; the interplay of ice, rock, and sea creates light conditions that shift by the hour.
