This is a national park of forested basins and open alpine tops, where the climate is cool and persistently damp — no dry season, no baking summer — so the vegetation reads as dense southern beech woodland below and hardy tussock and alpine scrub above the treeline. Water is everywhere: lakes, braided headwaters, seep-fed gullies and mossy forest floor. Wildlife here is best understood by habitat and function rather than by name. Forest birds — songbirds and insect-hunters — work the beech canopy and understorey; birds of prey quarter the open tops and forest edges; waterbirds and waders use the lake margins and quiet shallows; and small introduced and native forest mammals rustle through the leaf litter and scrub. It is a place defined by moisture, shelter and vertical range, not by spectacle.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal is the light and the layering. Early morning mist sits low over the water and lifts slowly through the valleys, softening the beech trunks and giving long, diffuse hours that suit forest work; the damp climate means green, saturated tones and frequent atmospheric haze rather than hard glare. Seasons shift the emphasis: spring and summer bring the busiest bird activity and long daylight, while autumn colour and quieter trails reward patient observation. Access is by road to the lake settlements and trailheads, with walking tracks ranging from easy lakeside paths to demanding alpine routes — so a visit can be as gentle or as committing as you like. Bring weatherproof layers, expect changeable conditions, and give the forest edges and lake margins your slowest hours; that is where the wildlife concentrates.
