This is a national park of dramatic vertical range, where alpine herb fields give way to scrub and beech-dominated bush, and where streams fed by snowmelt thread through the terrain. Under a Cfc climate there is no dry season; rain and cloud arrive throughout the year, and snow can settle on the upper slopes in the colder months. That combination of exposure, moisture and altitude shapes a hardy ecological community. Birds of prey work the open ground and updraughts, forest songbirds and small forest mammals occupy the sheltered bush, and hardy alpine and subalpine vegetation supports insects and the creatures that feed on them. Nothing here is lush in the tropical sense; the character is raw, wind-scoured and resilient.
For photographers and birdwatchers, the appeal lies in that rawness and in the way weather transforms the scene hour by hour. Cloud and rain are part of the experience rather than an obstacle, softening the light and lending the volcanic terrain an almost painterly depth; clear breaks reveal long views across the plateau. Seasonal change is subtle but real, with colder months bringing snow to higher ground and a quieter, more austere mood. Access is by established tracks and marked routes, so planning around forecast conditions is essential, and the exposed higher sections demand respect. Come for the raptors riding the ridgelines, the woodland birds and small mammals of the sheltered valleys, and the chance to photograph a landscape where geology and climate are visibly at work.
