Where the Volga Delta meets the Caspian steppe, roughly 1,205 square kilometres of protected landscape unfold across Liman Municipality in Astrakhan Oblast—a mosaic of reed beds, shallow lagoons, salt marshes, and semi-arid grassland that ranks among Russia's most ecologically vital wetland systems. The park's low, flat terrain is deceptively rich: freshwater reed thickets harbour small mammals and breeding birds of the open marsh, while brackish and saline pools support specialist waders and waterfowl adapted to extreme salinity. Seasonal flooding from Volga tributaries creates temporary expanses of shallow water that pulse with migratory energy each spring and autumn. The surrounding steppe transitions to low scrub and halophytic vegetation, where grassland specialists forage across windswept plains.
