Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area

Where the Annamite Mountains descend into central Thailand's monsoon forests, Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area sprawls across rugged limestone terrain interlaced with river valleys and evergreen woodland. The landscape is one of dramatic elevation changes—steep karst ridges rising above dense canopy, their slopes furrowed by seasonal streams that feed into larger watercourses threading through the reserve's heart. The scale of the reserve means solitude is possible; few tourists penetrate beyond the main watercourse, leaving the deeper interior to those willing to trek. Light is excellent year-round, though the dry season (November to May) offers the clearest skies and most forgiving humidity for extended fieldwork.
