ABOUT

Granite peaks rise abruptly from the highland plateau of Matungulu North, their weathered slopes clothed in scattered woodland and montane grassland that shifts between verdant and dormant with the austral rhythm of this high-altitude Cwb climate. Ol Donyo Sabuk's terrain is a mosaic of rocky outcrops, steep valleys, and open meadows where altitude moderates heat year-round, creating conditions that support a distinct highland fauna. The dry season, which arrives in the austral winter months, transforms the landscape into a palette of browns and golds, yet water-holding valleys and persistent ground moisture sustain populations of woodland birds, small mammals adapted to cool elevation, and predatory raptors that hunt across the open terrain. The park's ecology reflects the transition zone between lowland savanna and montane forest, offering visitors a chance to observe highland-dwelling creatures in a landscape sculpted by geology rather than typified by the grasslands for which Kenya is famous.
