The protected landscape encompasses deep valleys carved between quartzite peaks, alpine meadows, and montane forest fragments that characterize this region of Minas Gerais at roughly 1,400 metres elevation. The Cwb climate—cool and moist with a pronounced dry winter—shapes a habitat mosaic quite distinct from the lowland tropics: summers bring sufficient rainfall to sustain dense woodland and gallery forests along permanent water courses, while winter aridity tests the resilience of high-altitude vegetation adapted to seasonal dormancy and occasional frost. This ecological character supports a distinct montane fauna. Small forest mammals shelter in rocky crevices and dense understorey; birds of prey—drawn to thermals rising from the gorges—hunt across the exposed slopes and clearings; migratory songbirds exploit the forest canopy during their seasonal passages; and amphibians thrive in the park's numerous streams and seepage zones that flow year-round despite the dry season's stress.
For wildlife observers, the park's steep topography and granite geology create exceptional viewing opportunities throughout the year. The open ridgelines and sparse vegetation of the alpine meadows offer unobstructed sightlines for tracking raptors and wide-ranging birds that favour these exposed terrain. Winter, despite—or because of—the drier conditions, delivers crystalline skies and reduced vegetation cover that favour observation; summer's increased water availability concentrates wildlife at streams and forest edges, particularly rewarding patient photographers of woodland songbirds and water-dependent species. The established trail network winds through all major habitat types, from dense montane forest to exposed quartzite outcrops, allowing visitors to experience the full range of ecological zones within a single day. Early morning light on the granite peaks creates dramatic photography conditions, while the convergence of Atlantic Forest and campo vegetation creates a naturalist's gallery of complementary species unlikely to occur together elsewhere in the region.
