Sierra Mágina Nature Park

Limestone peaks thrust skyward across southern Spain's interior, their pale summits crowned by pine and fir forest that descends steeply into shadowed ravines carved by mountain streams. Parque Natural de Sierra Mágina encompasses 20,000 hectares of extraordinarily diverse terrain, where Mediterranean scrubland gives way to high-altitude pastures and dense woodland. This elevation gradient—from 600 metres to nearly 1,600—creates distinct ecological zones that support both northern European and African-influenced flora, making it a biodiversity hotspot where ecosystems collide and interweave.

Serious birdwatchers converge here for the raptors: Golden Eagles, Bonelli's Eagles, and the elusive Black Vulture command the thermals above the ridges, while Lammergeiers occasionally drift through. Spring migration transforms the park into an ornithological theatre, and autumn brings remarkable concentrations of warblers to the lower slopes. The dramatic morning light illuminates the jagged ridgeline, creating perfect conditions for photography, while the park's excellent network of trails and minimal crowds ensure intimate encounters with Spain's finest mountain wilderness.
