Great Saltee, the larger of two islands off the Wexford coast, is a study in ecological intensity compressed into fewer than fifty acres. The rocky terrain supports a mosaic of grassland, heathland, and low scrub that thrives in the Cfb oceanic climate—wet year-round, with neither a pronounced dry season nor extreme temperature swings. Seabirds dominate the landscape: breeding colonies of gulls, cormorants, and auks nest on cliff ledges and boulder fields, their populations swelling each spring as migrants return from Atlantic waters. The surrounding waters teem with fish that sustain both seabirds and marine mammals, while the island's sparse terrestrial habitat hosts small populations of ground-nesting birds and the invertebrates and small vertebrates that form the base of this maritime food web. Storm petrels and other tubenoses shelter in crevices, their calls echoing across the rock-bound shores during calm evenings.
For wildlife observers, the island's appeal lies in the sheer density and accessibility of seabird colonies during the breeding season, when avian predators and fishing birds congregate in numbers that rival far larger reserves. The Atlantic light here is unforgiving and magnificent—low-angle morning sun transforms cliff faces into galleries of shadow and gold, ideal for photography during spring and early summer when activity peaks. Landing is restricted to protect breeding birds, but boat tours circle the island close enough to observe nesting sites, feeding behaviour, and the complex social hierarchies of colonial species at eye level. The temperate maritime climate means visits are possible year-round, though winter storms can limit access; spring and summer offer the most reliable conditions and the most dramatic wildlife activity. This is birding and marine wildlife photography in its most concentrated form—a place where the ocean's productivity becomes visible in the sheer biomass of birds and the predators that pursue them.
